Visas for foreigners in Japan are divided into four categories as shown in the table below.
(1) Visa to work as well as Japanese without any working restrictions, (2) Visa for working within the permitted range, (3) Visa for not allowing work in principle (4) Visa for individually determining whether work is permitted or not.
①Visa to work as well as Japanese without any working restrictions
For "Permanent Resident", "Spouse or Child of Japanese National", "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident", or "Long Term Resident" visa based on personal relationship or status, you can work as well as Japanese without any working restrictions.
②Visa for working within the permitted range
For "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services", "Business Manager", or "Skilled Labor", etc.(refer to the following table) visa, you can work within the permitted range. If you wish to do work that does not belong to the activity within the range of your visa and it does not interfere with the execution of the activity corresponding to your visa, then it is recognized that it is appropriate, you can get "PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED". However, visa for “skills training” do not have that permission. When changing work, depending on the type of work, you may need to apply for "CHANGE OF STATUS OF RESIDENCE". In addition, you may be asked to submit a "CERTIFICATE OF AUTHORIZED EMPLOYMENT" from the company you are re-employing in order to check if you can work within the current visa range.
③Visa for not allowing work in principle
For "Student", "Dependent", "Trainee", "Temporary Visitor", Cultural Activities" visa, you can not work in principle. For "Student", "Dependent" visa, if you get "PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED", you can work part-time within 28 hours a week. For "Student" visa, you can work up to 8 hours a day during long school holidays. However, job in sex-related business or entertainment entertainment business is not permitted. In addition, visas for "Trainee" and "Temporary Visitor" are not given "PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED", so you can not work with these two visas.
④Visa for individually determining whether work is permitted or not
It is "Designated Activities" visa. The specific content of the activity corresponding to this visa is decided by the designation of the Minister of Justice. The activities may be working or non-working. If you want to perform work activities other than designated activities, you need to obtain "PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED".
